Upon hearing rumors swirling around the internet that a search on Yahoo! Japan’s struggling search engine does something strange when you enter the words “death” and “die” in Japanese, our reporter went to check it out. Could Japan’s most popular online search tool have revealed the sinister truth about a household name?

Sure enough, as he entered the kanji character 死 (shi, meaning death) and hit the search button, right at the top of the results page is an advert not for a funeral home or horror movie, but for good old Yodobashi Camera, one of Japan’s biggest electronics and appliance retailers.

The headline of the ad reads “Death is Yodobashi”, which is followed by a brief description.

“Death is Yodobashi. Death; free shipping and express delivery nationwide from the Yodobashi official mail order site.”

Awesome! Now, the next time my buddy in Hokkaido is having a birthday I can overnight him a fresh shipment of death, safe in the knowledge that I got the best price available!

While the name Yodobashi may mean little to some of our overseas readers, the shocking search result is to Japanese internet users about on par with a US resident seeing an ad for Best Buy that gleefully boasts the ultimate deals on mortality. “Think death, think Best Buy!” Hardly the image a company’s marketing division would pump millions of dollars into to create.

Our reporter tried again through the mobile Yahoo! site using the verb form of the word (shinu), only to get the exact same ad appearing. However, upon writing this article the same search revealed no advertisement whatsoever.

Whether or not this means Yodobashi has given up being a merchant of death remains to be seen. We sent a reporter to a local Yodobashi Camera to ask the staff if they have any death in stock, but she hasn’t returned yet. Come to think of it, it’s been a few days…

The internet is abuzz this morning after an individual going by the name of Reckz0r claimed to have broken Microsoft’s security and gained access to as many as 48 million Xbox Live accounts.

One of the world’s biggest online gaming and digital media services, Microsoft’s Xbox Live is home to millions of online gamers across the globe. The service is used not only to play multiplayer games over the internet but also to stream video and music and purchase a variety of multimedia content.

Although many users make their purchases through Xbox Live using pre-paid point cards, the majority store their credit card information on Microsoft’s servers, enabling them to buy games and addition content whenever they wish. For these users, news that the service may have been accessed by an outside source will no doubt be cause for deep concern.

The tweet from the alleged hacker was posted at 06:44 a.m. JST. In it, the individual gloats that the billion-dollar service has been accessed and that valuable data had been stolen.

The Twitter user also posted a 6.12 GB file that allegedly contains millions of Xbox Live users’ credentials as proof of their nefarious achievement.

“Today, Xbox Live has been brutally owned, in true-fashion,” the user begins before taunting a few of his hacking contemporaries and goading Sony, whose own online service PlayStation Network was hacked by members of the Lulsec group in April 2011, whom Reckz0r refers to as allies. “I brutally owned Xbox Live a few days ago, but I decided to dump all the super-dooper precious data now.”

The news comes just two days after Microsoft lifted the lid on its next generation home console, dubbed Xbox One. During the presentation, Microsoft officials chose to focus mainly on the number of online services that would be available to purchasers of the new console rather than revealing upcoming games. News of this morning’s hack will no doubt come as a blow to the company, who is clearly banking on its consumers using the upcoming console to access paid content via the internet.

Microsoft has yet to comment on the issue but we’ll be sure to keep you posted as news comes in.

Update: Gamespot has recently received confirmation from Microsoft that, contrary to Reckz0r’s tweets, Xbox Live has not been hacked, saying:

“Xbox Live has not been hacked. Microsoft can confirm that there has been no breach to the security of our Xbox Live service.”

Due to its location in the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” Japan has many onsen (natural hot springs). The mineral composition of each onsen varies and is said to provide bathers with different health benefits. One onsen in particular, named Ryujin (lit. Dragon God), is also known as bijin no yu or “the beautiful women hot spring.” It is hailed as a hot spring for enhancing beauty and the waters are said to smooth and moisturize skin. Despite these claims being repeated for hundreds of years, some may still be skeptical. However, a recent study suggests that the waters of Ryujin Onsen actually have beautifying capabilities.

Researchers from the Wakayama Medical University and representatives from a major manufacturer of bath salts conducted the study in November of last year with a total of twelve male and female participants ranging from ages 30 to 50. Participants soaked each of their hands for five minutes in a water bath with the same alkalinity as the waters of Ryujin Onsen. Scientists then measured the amount of moisture in each hand and found that after soaking in the water, skin retained three times more moisture. Scientists are still unsure if the increase in water-retaining capacity is due to the high levels of sodium bicarbonate in Ryujin Onsen’s waters. They plan to continue their research and will share their results at a conference for the Japanese Society of Balneology, Climatology, and Physical Medicine held at Beppu Onsen in Ooita Prefecture.

Aside from having beauty enhancing waters within its borders, Japan also has the highest life expectancy in the world. The country could possibly be the closest we’ll ever get to the fountain of youth.

As a native of the United States, I’m all too familiar with the controversy around daylight savings time. I’m not sure if anyone actually “loves” it, but it certainly seems like most people hate it. WebMD, the Internet’s favorite doctor, even has an article about the effects the time change has on people’s health, though they seem minimal.

Either way, one of my favorite things about living in Japan is not having to worry about that annual spring torture of moving the clocks ahead by an hour. With no daylight savings, you always know what time it is in Japan. Unfortunately, it looks like one Japanese politician has it out for me and my beauty sleep.

Governor Inose: Timelord?

Inose Naoki, Governor of Tokyo, suggested on Wednesday that Japan move their “standard time” ahead—by two hours!

As inhumane as that sounds to this already sleep-deprived, non-morning-person, there is at least a rather logical reason for his suggestion. In an effort to position more financial institutions in Japan, he wants to have the Tokyo Financial Markets opening first in the world. (Australia seems to have the number one spot now.)

Governor Inose’s suggestion will be taken into consideration in June as part of the government’s growth strategy.

It is interesting to note that Japanese standard time hasn’t changed in over 100 hundred years, since it was established in 1886.

Singapore, on the other hand, followed Malaysia in 1982, and unified their national standard time, in addition to moving it forward 30 minutes. The governor seems to have drawn inspiration from their change.

While I completely appreciate Governor Inose’s intentions, I’d like to suggest a compromise. Get the trains running 24-hours-a-day and just have the markets open early! That way I can stay in bed. In fact, I bet it would help improve national morale if we move the time back a little. Let everyone sleep in?

Summer, that time of the year where sweat is sadly inevitable and the strength of stinky body odors increases tenfold. Stinky feet can be a problem for boot wearers in winter, but in the summer, even the most breathable slip-ons can get stuck with the funk. For people in Japan, who are often required to remove their shoes at work and social functions, it’s a real cause for concern. Luckily, we’ve discovered a way to counteract the nasty foot smell without drowning everything in specialized deodorants. Thanks to instructions found on the how-to online resource, eHow, we know to just stick our stinky shoes in the freezer! Skeptical? See the full article to learn how it works.

At first, we too were uncertain of the effectiveness of this anti-odor freezer method, so we decided to test it out on the smelliest pair of ladies shoes that we could find. These well-worn flats smelled so bad that they had infected the entire entranceway with their funk. The owner had already tried a variety of ways to eliminate the odor, including a run through the washing machine, and yet they still retained that strong, ripe scent. We pity the other shoes in the entranceway for having to sit near them; the smell was that bad. Honestly, as unlikely as the method seemed to us, freezing these shoes was really their last hope for being stinky-free, and if it worked on them, we could be certain that it would work on just about anything.

Removing the odor is a three-step process:
1. Make sure that the shoes are absolutely dry.
2. Place them in a Ziploc or other plastic bag.
3. Leave them in the freezer overnight.

Morning came for our certified smell tester, and so too the moment of truth. We removed the shoes from the freezer and brought the frozen footwear to our nose… Nothing. No smell whatsoever.

Wary of jumping to conclusions we decided to wait for a while and do a second smell test, just in case the lack of fragrance was a result of the lingering cold. An hour later, with the flats thoroughly thawed, we sniffed at them again… Still no smell! The freezing method really works!

Bad foot odor is generally caused by bacteria living in your dark, damp shoes. These bacteria can’t survive in cold environments, so sticking them in the freezer for a few hours kills most of them off, an the odor with it. If by chance the smell still lingers after freezing, leaving a bit of baking soda in the shoes overnight should do the trick. Odor eating enzymes like the odor removers found at many pet stores can also work wonders on your shoes, but is only necessary as a last resort. Most foul odors can be eliminated with a simple night in the freezer. So, make some room for shoes between the ice cream and the frozen pizza, and forget worrying about stinky feet this summer!

With all the temperature and humidity regulators at work on a commercial aircraft, it’s not uncommon for a little condensation and leakage to happen from time to time.

The dripping itself isn’t a big deal but when you’re strapped in a chair next to a sleeping 300-lb man, the annoyance factor gets amplified. As captured in this photo aboard a Cathay Pacific flight, one man decided to deal with it by pulling out his trusty umbrella.

However, surprisingly, the act of opening a parasol mid-flight is a violation of Hong Kong aviation regulations and could land this man in prison.

According to the Civil Aviation Department, if a passenger opens an umbrella mid-flight it has an impact on the orderly operation of the aircraft. It is also possible the man violated some “unruly behavior” related regulations including not complying with crew instructions.

Police are reported to be investigating the incident and will determine whether to go forward with charges. If the violations amount to a summary offense then he could face a HK$10,000 (US$1,300) fine and/or six months in prison.  If his offenses are serious enough to be an indictable offense he can be penalized by a maximum HK$50,000 ($6,500) and/or two years in prison.

So, if you ever feel a little dripping while flying the friendly skies, Cathay would like to remind you to leave the umbrella in your bag and ask a flight attendant to take care of it, as shown in the photo.

One high school in China may have gone a little overboard in its uniform design, though, as it seems to have given priority to keeping cool rather than keeping students’ underwear hidden.

The high school, located in China’s northeastern Hebei Province, recently distributed this year’s summer uniforms to its students. The uniforms consist of a plain polo shirt and a pair of navy sweat pants, which is pretty standard as far as Chinese school uniforms go.

What’s not so normal is how transparent the pants are. In an effort to keep the students as cool as possible, the pants are made of an extra thin, almost mesh-like cloth.

It didn’t take the students long to realize the pants they were going to be wearing every day for the next few months were made of a material that might be better-suited to making a screen door than an article of clothing.

Upon getting her new low-thread count threads, one girl rushed back to the dormitory to try them on. Sure enough, the pants didn’t provide anywhere near the acceptable coverage, with her roommate immediately remarking, “I can see what color underwear you’ve got on.”

Other female students concurred. “You can totally see the panty line, and the color, too! If they’re black, everyone will know they’re black. If they’re red, everyone will know they’re red!” complained one. “It’ll be so embarrassing to wear this in front of the boys in class,” fretted another. A third student resignedly mumbled, “Guess I’ll have to just wear another layer of clothes underneath the uniform.”

Faced with such logical complaints, school administrators took the unorthodox route of making the most illogical response possible, insisting that “The uniform’s degree of transparency is within reason.”

Honestly, this took us by surprise. We never knew there was a sliding scale for how see-through academically-mandated teenage girls’ clothing is allowed to be, but then again we’re not professional youth educators, much in the same way that we’re not socially clueless people with a staggering lack of empathy.

Before being distributed to the students, the uniforms passed an official screening process, although we’re a little skeptical about the rigors of a clothing test that doesn’t include “conceals underwear” as an inspection point. The school also boasted that the uniforms were produced by a reputable manufacturer, which raises questions about its criteria for “reputable” when the term is being applied to a company that makes see-through clothing for teens.

Parents and guardians, to the surprise of no one other than the school, are not pleased.

“How can you make developing girls wear this?” asked one parent, apparently sharing our lack of faith in the school’s official screening process. “If an adult were wearing this, it wouldn’t be something to get so worked up over, but it’s a different story when it’s a high school girl. It’s unacceptable,” commented a second.

“Young people’s bodies go through very big changes during high school, especially for girls,” said another parent. “They are very sensitive to the kind of attention they got from those around them, and in the long run these uniforms will have a negative affect on their emotional and psychological well-being.”

So far, the school is refusing to budge on its choice of uniform, adding that they cannot be returned to the manufacturer. We’ll be watching to see how the situation develops, and for the sake of the students’ modesty, we’ll be keeping our eyes above the waist.

Toad, the mushroom-headed character from the Super Mario series of video games that dates back almost 30 years now, is a character known to millions around the globe. Clear a castle in the original game and he’s there to break the news that the princess isn’t actually there. Slip on a banana peel while burning rubber in Super Mario Kart and it’s often his shrill voice you’ll hear echoing through the enormous green pipe tunnels. Need a man to pick and throw vegetables super fast in Super Mario Bros 2? Toad’s your guy.

Little did we know, though, that Toad has been harbouring a terrible secret the entire time we’ve known him. One that shocked Japanese fans and Twitter users to the core when the following photo came to light.

Spotted by an eager Japanese viewer, this image comes from the Super Mario animated series. We’re not entirely sure what the overall theme of this episode is or whether it focuses entirely on Toad revealing his secret to our hero Mario, but this is a scene that few of us will ever be able to forget.

Not only is the upper portion of what we long thought to be Toad’s head not connected, but he’s clearly suffering from severe hair loss. Perhaps all these years of fretting over Princess Peach’s whereabouts have taken their toll on the poor little guy?

A recent survey suggests that Japanese men find nail art to be a big turn-off, but Nail Salson Venusrico would have us believe differently. The salon, located in Chiyoda, Tokyo, commissioned comic artist Poaru (Twitter, homepage) to create two professionally illustrated manga pages. These comic-advertisements teach us two things: 1) how easy it is to get your nails done and 2) that getting your nails done will result you getting married to a handsome guy. Really, really quickly. In fact, in just five short panels, you can go from sad and lonely to married!

We’re not sure if Venusrico is guaranteeing results or just hinting at a connection here. Maybe we should get Mr. Sato to test it out and see how quickly he can score?
